NBA G League Cancels Remainder of 2019-20 Season

Jun 4, 2020, 3:35 PM | Updated: 11:21 pm

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The NBA G League canceled the remainder of its 2019-20 season.

On Thursday, June 4, the league announced it would not continue to play and finish out the current season like the NBA.

Like the NBA, the G League paused its season in March 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that the G League “paid out all of its players through the season (17 canceled days) and extended their health benefits.”

“While disappointing, we fully support the NBA G League’s announcement canceling the remainder of the 2019-20 season. We know this was an extremely hard decision driven by many factors, but a necessary one, as the health and safety of our community is paramount,” Salt Lake City Stars president Jonathan Rinehart said in a statement. “I am grateful to our players, coaches and staff for their remarkable efforts and contributions over the course of the season, and especially to our fans and partners for their tremendous support. We would have enjoyed competing for a championship following the most successful season in Stars history, but now we turn our focus to returning to the court for the 2020-21 campaign. At the same time, we recognize that there are much larger issues of pain and trauma facing our country. We are committed to lending our voice to address systemic racial injustice and continuing to help those in need.”

When the G League paused the season, the Salt Lake City Stars had the best record in the Western Conference. The only team with a better record in the league was the Wisconsin Herd.

Through 42 games, the Stars owned a record of 30-12. The team was on a six-game winning streak.

During the season, five of the top six scorers for the Stars were members of the Utah Jazz.

Those players were:

  • Rayjon Tucker – 20.3 PPG
  • Jarrell Brantley – 18.8 PPG
  • Justin Wright-Foreman – 17.3 PPG
  • Nigel Williams-Goss – 15.3 PPG
  • Juwan Morgan – 14.3 PPG

Salt Lake City has been home to the Stars since 2016.
