There has been unrest across the nation in the wake of the death of Houston native George Floyd. There have been protests in many cities, including in Abilene. For former Hardin-Simmons basketball star and current HSU Assistant Coach Derrick Jefferson, Floyd's death was a cruel reminder of the world we live in.

"That frustration as an African American deep down in our soul that when something happens, it's like do we rely on the police or do we try to just hey, it's a lost cause," said Jefferson.

As a former athlete and current coach. Jefferson knows how helpful athletics can be in a time like this. "I wish everybody in the world played a sport just because you would understand differences or you would spend time with people that did not come from the same background that you come from," said Jefferson. "And I wouldn't say it would change the world, but it would be one step into making a difference in the world."
