Kansas drops D9 Citrus Blossom Invitational finale

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Invitational finale between Kansas (2-8) and Missouri (8-2) came down to one inning as the teams concluded play at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex with the Tigers earning a 12-0 victory over the Jayhawks.

After having trouble finding their swing yesterday against Bethune-Cookman, the struggles continued against Missouri.

The Tigers entered Sunday’s contest with a 4-0 record on the weekend and tossed Cassie Gasper, while the Jayhawks looked to Kirsten Pruett to continue their pitching success that had been displayed in the previous four games.

After a scoreless first by both teams, Missouri opened its scoring attack with a two-run home run in the second. Pruett pitched out of the inning and also tallied a scoreless third, before the game-defining fourth inning.

The Tigers faced a total of three Kansas pitchers in the fourth, while amassing nine runs against the KU defense and pitching staff. Lexy Mills relieved Pruett, but was unable to find success, and was replaced by Hannah Todd.

Todd pitched out of the inning and also faced the Tigers in the fifth inning, tallying two strikeouts in her 1.2 innings pitched.

The Jayhawks were not able to eliminate the deficit to continue play, and finished the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Invitational, 2-3.

NOTES

  • Morgyn Wynne earned her first hit of the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Invitational in the second inning against Missouri. Wynne’s hit was the first for the Jayhawks in the game.
  • Hannah Todd tallied her first strikeout of the season in the fourth inning against Missouri. Todd added her second strikeout in the fifth inning.
