SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Salt Lake's police officers want a raise.
With a vastly-improved economy, the union says it's time for the city to boost pay enough to attract top talent.
About 20 officers attended an April 2 meeting, many speaking during public comment to tell the council they're feeling drawn to suburbs, where the pay is higher and costs are lower.
Starting pay in Salt Lake City is about $20 per hour. An 8-year veteran can earn $33 per hour. In the valley, that's the eighth-highest pay, according to union officials.
The officers may be taking their argument to the city council, but for now, the council isn't involved. The mayor's team is who sits across the table from the union, city staff say.
The council can deal directly with the union only after one of the sides declares an impasse, something typically reserved for the eleventh hour.
