PORTLAND, Ore. – A small kitten was a cause for celebration Friday at the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon.

The organization works to span and neuter stray and feral cats because there are simply too many cats with not enough homes.

The kitten, dubbed “Number 28,” was the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon’s 100,000th cat to be spayed or neutered.

The coalition uses what it calls the “feral cat equation” to estimate how many feral and stray cat’s it’s prevented.

“We’ve got a really great equation that we use and it shows one cat having a litter of four, and that’s it. And then each one of those four having a litter of four, and that’s it. And then those 16 have a litter of four and over 10 years, that would be 1.398 million,” said Karen Kraus, executive director of Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon.

If you regularly feed or help a stray cat, you can bring it in to the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon and for just a donation, they will spay, neuter, and vaccinate it.

It also offers low-cost services for pet cats.
