Fuel truck crash keeps OR 22 closed indefinitely

IDANHA, Ore. - OR 22 in the Santiam Canyon will remain closed between milepost 55 at the east end of Idanha to the Santiam Junction due to an accident that took place late on Friday night.

The road will be closed indefinitely because of damage caused by the fuel spill from a tanked trailer crash at milepost 63. It is estimated that almost 11,600 gallons of unleaded gasoline spilled.

The fuel truck crashed on an icy Oregon highway and caught fire, killing the driver and igniting the nearby brush, Oregon State Police said.

Troopers found that a 2001 Kenworth Central Petro fuel truck lost traction on the icy road and overturned, coming to a stop blocking the highway.

"The fuel tank ruptured and caught fire, spreading to nearby brush," state police said. "A Gates Fire Department fire engine that was responding to the scene also lost control on the icy road and rolled onto its side. There were additional collisions in the area that resulted in no injuries."
