HELENA – A man is in custody after a high-speed chase Thursday night through Helena and East Helena.

The driver, who has not yet been identified, was believed to have two warrants out for his arrest. One of those warrants for absconding led to an attempted traffic stop.

That traffic stop turned into a pursuit through portions of Helena and East Helena with speeds exceeding 100 mph around 11 p.m. Thursday.

Because of the time of night, there was little traffic on the roads. With coordination between the Montana Highway Patrol, Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office and Helena police, the situation ended with the suspect being run off the road into a ditch near the intersection of Custer Avenue and McHugh Drive.

The suspect tried to escape after running into the ditch, but police apprehended him.

“The Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office, they were able to spike the vehicle and ended up, he lost control and came into the ditch over here. He took off on foot and ran that way and we were able to apprehend him,” Trooper Zach Freeman with the Montana Highway Patrol said.

No further details have been released.
