Lucas Nights: Art of the Card--Tarot and Lotería

Although it's still under construction, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art has begun its community programming efforts, including an event that examines the art and history of tarot and lotería cards. The night features a discussion with curator Erin M. Curtis, writer and scholar Gloria Arjona and artist and tarot reader Marcella Kroll (at 7 and 8:30 p.m.). Other activities include tarot and lotería card-making, onstage tarot readings, lotería games, private readings, raffles, music by dublab's DJ Wyldeflower, food trucks and a cash bar. The New Wave
MOCA and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in downtown L.A.
Film Independent, KCRW and MOCA team up for a weekend of keynotes, panels and programming to celebrate the "spirit of change that is driving the transformation of art and culture." The free showcase features keynotes by director Alma Har'el (Honey Boy, LoveTrue, Bombay Beach) and artist Hebru Brantley as well as a conversation with South Asian auteur Anurag Kashyap (Gangs of Wasseypur, Sacred Games). Throughout the weekend, MOCA offers free admission to its galleries. MOCA Grand Avenue Ahmanson Auditorium is located at 250 S. Grand Ave., and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA Warehouse is located at 152 N. Central Ave.

'A New Día' Immersive Art Installation

A new, immersive and Instagram-ready Day of the Dead art installation opens at the Art District gallery. Presented by Estrella Jalisco, the company has collaborated with filmmaker Robert Rodriguez for a "sensory journey of the four geodesic dome installations." The event is 21+.

Now in its fifth year, the Panamanian International Film Festival expands its boundaries. The program includes more than 45 films; a celebration of the late actor Raul Julia with a screening of Ben De Jesus' All the World's A Stage: Raul Julia, a screening area for films using 360-degree technology; and panel discussions. The weekend also features a poetry pop-up and a live theater piece developed for Panafest by SP!T director Alex Alpharoah.

The annual fair celebrates the art of paper, letterpress printing and handmade books. Seventy artists and vendors will show off custom posters, hand-printed cards, hand-made paper, ephemera and antique books. Jessica Spring of Springtide Press is this year's featured artist, presenting a lecture on Saturday. The exhibition Inside Hollywood: The Earl Hay Press Collection features rare type and printing blocks from Earl Hays Press, the leading producer of "fakes" and "inserts" for Hollywood films and TV shows for a century.

The 16th-annual chalk contest features sidewalk art by both emerging and professional artists. Held in conjunction with the Belmont Shore Art Walk on Second St., artists vie for cash prizes. The 5-mile walk, which begins and ends at City Hall, benefits APLA Health, a nonprofit that provides health and advocacy services. Walk alone or with a team. While it's not mandatory, organizers suggest raising $25 for the cause. The day begins with aerobic warmups and finishes with arts, music, entertainment and information booths.

Norton Simon Fall Festival
Norton Simon Museum -- 411 W. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena
Families can travel around the world and through time by participating in pop-up art-making workshops in the galleries and garden. The creative writing nonprofit 826LA holds a time-travel workshop where you can create luggage and a journal, design a time machine, write postcards from the 18th century, create 17th-century inspired hats and explore 19th-century Paris. There's also storytelling and music. The event is free for all children 18 and younger. Adults pay general admission.

Santa Monica Symphony 75th Concert Premiere
Barnum Hall at Santa Monica High School -- 600 Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica
The symphony opens its historic season with Guido Lamell conducting. Robert deMaine, principal cello of the LA Phil, performs Dvorak's Cello Concerto in B Minor. The program also includes Weber's Overture to Oberon and Gershwin's An American In Paris. The evening begins with a pre-concert lecture by KUSC's Rich Capparela and features coffee and cake during an extended intermission. All concerts are open seating.
