By season’s end, Moapa Valley might prove to be the best Class 3A team in Nevada. So to start the season, the Pirates went up north out of state to see what they were made of.

Moapa Valley surged past Canyon View (Utah) on Friday night, forcing five turnovers and never looking back in a 41-14 win in Cedar City, Utah.

The Pirates scored on their opening drive and tallied a pair of defensive touchdowns, including a 46-yard scoop-and-score. Russell Bodily ran for 109 yards and a touchdown, and Hayden Redd had 82 rushing yards and two scores.

“First game, we had lots pf penalties, lots of mistakes, but we ran the ball. I thought our offensive line blocked pretty well,” Moapa Valley coach Brent Lewis said. “Always good to start off with a win.”

Moapa Valley returns to Overton next week for a home contest against Class 4A Coronado.
