Cash boost for innovative cancer work in south Warwickshire

INNOVATIVE cancer work has been celebrated at an awards ceremony in south Warwickshire.

The Rigby Awards was launched to coincide with the opening of Stratford Hospital’s cancer ward in 2017, which The Rigby Foundation helped fund.

Every year since £50,000 has been given to South Warwickshire Foundation Trust projects looking at improving cancer care.

This year’s offering saw a grant given by The Rigby Foundation to urology and radiology departments to improve how prostate biopsies are performed.

The money will enable specialist funding to be purchased, which will reduce the risk of infection and enable biopsies to be carried out under local instead of general anaesthetic. The equipment can also be used to treat cancer and incontinence.

And at the ceremony Sir Peter Rigby announced the foundation’s plans to support local cancer care even further by funding improvements to Warwick Hospital’s Aylesford Unit.

It will see facilities upgraded for patients undergoing chemotherapy, the environment enhanced for patients and visitors and a new outpatient waiting area created which will give patients more privacy.

SWFT chief executive Glen Burley said: “We are extremely grateful for the continued support from the Rigby Foundation. Their generosity is giving our clinicians the opportunity to implement pioneering treatments that will improve the care we offer to patients.

“The support they have given to the trust is evident in The Rigby Unit at Stratford Hospital. Cancer patients are able to receive treatment in a comfortable, pleasant environment with access to enhanced facilities and equipment. I am delighted that this is going to be replicated at the Aylesford Unit.”
