Michael Fabricant at the launch of the Rural Shop Report

Lichfield and Burntwood’s MP has given his backing to small rural shops at an event in the House of Commons.

Michael Fabricant was at the launch of the 2019 Rural Shop Report by the Association of Convenience Stores.

He heard how poor broadband and rising costs of cash machines were proving to be a continuing challenge for such businesses.

The Conservative MP said: “In the Lichfield constituency some of our smaller villages would find it hard to exist if they are not sustained by their local shop.

“With limited bus services in rural areas and some older people not having access to private transport, the small shop is the very life blood of village life.

“Kings Bromley, Alrewas, Yoxall and other communities would all be worse off without their local shop.

“I was proud to hold a banner at the event saying that I support my rural shops.”

Is this a magic banner of faster broadband? Or the sort of pride that reduces business rates for smaller businesses?

Also, Kings Bromley has a Co-op now.

A strong contender for the least interesting ‘story’ ever published on Lichfield Live!

Holding a sign is not necessarily “supporting”. It would be if he had joined residents to oppose the cuts in bus services by the County Council or previously the Community Transport by the District Council.

Can we assume he has nothing to say about the City Centre shops and the Friarsgate Fiasco?
