Chandigarh: A Sector 37 resident has been arrested by the police with charas. According to the police, Arun Gaba was arrested from near the road separating Sector 39 and 40 on February 17. The police seized 200 gm of charas from him. TNS

Man ends his life in Sec 56

Chandigarh: A 38-year-old man reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in Palsora, Sector 56, on Monday. The victim has been identified as Vivek. The police received information about the incident at 10.40 am. The room in which the victim committed suicide was locked from inside. The police had to break open the door. The victim’s brother, Raman Kumar, along with the police, took the victim to the GMSH, where doctors declared him brought dead. TNS

Seminar on chemistry

Chandigarh: The Department of Chemistry of Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma (GGDSD) College organised a seminar on ‘Chemistry Sensitisation’. Scientists from the PU, NIPER and IISER were invited to deliver lectures. 6 former pu students shine

Chandigarh: Six former students of the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) — Shweta Sharma, Ravneet Kaur, Nidhi Siwach, Anubha Jindal, Priya Gupta and Divanshi Janmeja — have cleared the Haryana Judicial Services-2020. The alumni were invited for an interaction with Prof Raj Kumar, PU Vice-Chancellor. He congratulated them and asked them to motivate other students. tns

IT fest AT SECTOR 50 COLLEGE

Chandigarh: The Government College of Commerce and Business Administration, Sector 50, held its first IT fest, ‘TECHINFOMATICS-GCCBA’, on Monday. Around 100 participants from various colleges of Chandigarh and Panjab participated in the fest. The winners were given prizes and certificates by the principal of the host college, Prof Nisha Aggarwal. There were seven events in the fest and a series of events were organised, including web designing, logo designing, game of codes (coding and debugging), movie-making, IT quiz, e-treasure hunt and LAN gaming. Literary fest at SD College

Chandigarh: The English Literary Club, GGDSD College, organised an inter-college literary Fest , 'IRA', in association with the Society for Promotion of Ethical and Affordable Health Care (S.P.E.A.K.). Students from eight colleges of the tricity participated in the event. The theme of the fest was ‘Physical and mental health’. The competitions were followed by a ‘Human Library’, which was an interactive session. President of S.P.E.A.K. India, Dr R Kumar, gave a presentation on how one could maintain good health through lifestyle changes. TNS

Foundation Day at NIPER

Mohali: The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) celebrated its Foundation Day today at its Convention Centre. The chief guest was Prof (Dr) Ranbir Chander Sobti, Education Consultant Government of Bihar, and Senior Scientist, Indian National Science Academy. Prof Abbas Ali Mahdi, Professor and Head, Department of Biochemistry, King George’s Medical University, Lucknow, was the guest of honor. Mahdi talked about the pace with which science has been progressing. Prof R C Sobti delivered a lecture on ‘Tumor microenvironment as a potential predictive biomarker and pharmacogenomics of lung cancer’. TNS

Chandigarh: The Punjab Public Service Commission declared the results for the Punjab Civil Service (Judicial) on Friday. Two candidates from the PU have cleared the exam. Khushdeep Kaur scored the third rank in BC category and Ramanpreet Kaur bagged the second rank in SC category. TNS

3 hurt in mishap

Ambala: Three persons, including a mother-son duo, were seriously injured when a Toyota Fortuner collided with a truck in Mullana near here, the police said. A local businessman, Vikram Singh, reported to the police that the accident took place around 11.45 pm when they were returning from his cousin’s marriage near Yamunanagar. The injured were admitted to a local hospital. The police have registered a case against the truck driver. TNS

2 held for cruelty to animals

Ambala: The police have arrested Israr of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Nakurand of Shamli in Uttar Pradesh for cruelty to animals and claimed to have rescued 25 cattle from their possession, officials said. According to the police, the arrests were made after a truck was stopped at a check-post in Parao and it was found that 25 cattle head were being smuggled in a cruel manner for slaughtering purposes. The accused were produced before a local court, which ordered to release them on bail. TNS

Woman, daughter go missing

Ambala: A woman and her minor daughter had reportedly gone missing from their home, the police said. According to information, Gurcharan Singh of Shahzadpur had reported to the police that his 45-year-old wife Saravjit Kaur and their 8-year-old daughter Lovepreet Kaur had left home on February 2 without intimating him and had not returned so far. The police have launched a manhunt to trace the missing mother-daughter duo, the officials added. TNS

8 proclaimed offenders held

Ambala: The district police have arrested eight proclaimed offenders wanted in separate cases during the past 24 hours, officials said. According to information, the accused were evading arrest ever since they were booked by the police following the local courts had declared them proclaimed offenders. The arrested fugitives included Parminder Singh, Arjun, Pawan Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, Ravinder, Gursharan Singh and a woman wanted in a criminal case registered against her at the Ambala City police station, the police said, while adding that the arrested proclaimed offenders will be produced before the local courts on Tuesday. Aman, Anand help Shiva XI win

Chandigarh: Shiva XI beat Green Heroes by 121 runs in a Mohali Corporate League match on Monday. Batting first, Shiva XI made 204/7 in 25 overs. Aman scored 90 runs. In reply, Green Heroes were restricted to 83/8. Ravinder Singh (31) was the top scorer for Green Heroes. Anand Bishnoi claimed four wickets. TNS
