(Published on 6/23/2019) A statue of Jean Nicolet is one of the centerpieces at Wequiock Falls County Park in Green Bay. The statue was originally placed in 1951 a mile to the west at Red Banks, where it was long believed that Nicolet first stepped foot in what is now Wisconsin in 1634. The statue was moved to Wequiock Falls County Park in 2009, but a new book by a Milwaukee historian claims Nicolet likely first set foot in Wisconsin at present-day Marinette.

This statue of Nicolet is at Wequiock Falls County Park near Green Bay but Marinette, on the bay of Green Bay’s western shore, may have been his first stop in what is now Wisconsin.

(Published on 6/23/2019) An illuminated cheese sign can be seen through the front window of what will soon become Wisconsin Cheese Mart, 119 State St. The store, which will feature 300 Wisconsin cheeses, is scheduled to open July 1 and will be the second location for the retailer that was established in 1938 in downtown Milwaukee.
