Wisconsin Bike Fed Receives Grant to Improve Bike Equity in Madison

0

The Wisconsin Bike Fed and JUST Bikes Coalition partner Freewheel, Wheels for Winners, and Down with Bikes Mobile Repair are working together this summer to increase access to biking in Madison’s lower-income neighborhoods.

Bicycling can provide a low-cost and self-reliant form of transportation for people of all ages, but children and families in lower-income neighborhoods lack access to repair facilities.

JUST Bikes Coalition member organizations are offering free bike safety and bike tune-up events around Madison this summer at the following places:

◉ Dane County Farmers Market (Capitol Square): Free bike safety clinics and bike tune-ups every Saturday, 8 am to noon

◉ River Food Pantry (2201 Darwin Road): Free tune-ups every Tuesday, 4-7 pm

◉ Meadowood Neighborhood Center: Mondays July 15th and 22nd 11 AM-3 PM @ 5740 Raymond Rd, Madison, WI 53711

◉ Madison Baha’i Faith Community Center: Wednesday, July 17th 5-8 PM @ 324 W Lakeside St, Madison, WI 53715

◉ Theresa Terrace Neighborhood Center: Thursdays July 18th 11 AM-3 PM, July 25th 4-6 PM (Community Dinner) @ 1409 Theresa Terrace, Madison, WI 53711

◉ Centro Hispano, El Mercadito (Farmers market): Every other Wednesday June – September, 4-7 PM @ 810 W Badger Rd, Madison, WI 53713

◉ Latino Academy of Workforce Development: Bike Repair – Wednesdays July 17th and July 24th 5-6:30 PM @ 1917 Lake Point Dr., Madison, WI 53713

“We’re so grateful to Madison Community Foundation for the $15,000 challenge grant that is allowing us to help provide this support to people who would like to bike, but who lack a bicycle that is mechanically sound or information on how to ride safer,” says Jake Newborn, Wisconsin Bike Fed. Director of Programming, in a statement. “Working with our JUST Bikes partners has allowed us to do so much to help improve bike access for more communities in Madison.”

The Bike Fed is running a campaign to raise $10,000 in matching funds. $5000 has already been committed. Donations are accepted through this link
