Blaze at L&M Wood Products still smoldering

Jun 1, 2020 | 2:50 PM

According to Glaslyn and area residents, a fire broke out this morning at L&M Wood Products Inc. and is in the process of being contained.

Bethany Kuhmayer, an administrative assistant with the R.M. of Parkdale, told meadowlakeNOW the fire broke out this morning as she was waving her husband off to work at approximately 7:30 a.m.

“We don’t have much information right now,” she said. “I just know Glaslyn Fire Department is out there, there are some water bombers and some planes out.”

L&M wood products is a sawdust facility and Kuhmayer said one of the piles of sawdust caught fire.

According to the village’s administrator Kate Clarke, people are standing on streets watching the blaze.

“I’m in the office but we’re all standing on the street watching because right from Main Street, you can see everything,” Clarke said. “What we’re seeing now is helicopters dropping water and the air tankers have come through but they’re gone. We’re not exactly sure what is happening.”

L&M Wood Products in owned by Meadow Lake Tribal Council Industrial Investments. The company’s CEO Al Balisky was contacted though did not immediately return calls.

Meadow Lake Tribal Council Vice Chief Richard Derocher said he has not been updated but is aware of combustion at the site.

“Internal combustion and strong winds, it’s similar to a bale, a bale will burn from inside if it gets warm enough, [it may catch fire],” Derocher said. “As far as I know, there is no danger at this moment.”

There will be more on this story as it develops.
