Although the Women’s History and Culture Center is closed for July while Air Conditioning  improvements are made, there is a lot going on behind the scenes!

On August 8, International Cat Day, the Center will offer a Pet Bereavement And Grief Counseling session for people dealing with the loss of beloved pets.

Elspeth Kuta’s Virgin Valley Women Settlers talks scheduled for July are now on the calendar for August. On Thursday August 8, Elspeth will talk about Mabel McKnight, Velate Hardy and Mary Jane Reber, then follow with a second seminar on August 22.

Friday August 9 is the unveiling of the wall mural outside the Women’s Center. Please join us as we celebrate the first of many beautiful murals to grace our city.

Our next display at the Mesquite Library is “Nevada’s Wonder Women: The Nation’s First Female Majority State Legislature.” It will run from August 11 through October 6, as a lead in to the People’s Walk scheduled for Thursday September 26. Volunteers are needed to design and put this display together – to mark an historic event in women’s history.

At the August 13th City Council meeting, the mayor will read a proclamation declaring August 26 Women’s Equality Day, to celebrate the ratification of the 19th Amendment giving American women the right to vote.

While the AC is out, the usual lineup of Wednesday Meditation classes in Room 23 has been replaced by Wednesday Energy Wellness classes in Room 19. The Energy Wellness classes, held in the even numbered months, will continue into August, with Wednesday Meditation classes back on their usual schedule in September.

All Call for Volunteers! There is a lot to do in the month of August to get ready for the People’s Walk on Thursday September 26, to honor Nevada being the first state in the Nation to elect a female majority legislature.

It takes many hands to make it come together on an event of this size, so out of town visitors see the best of what Mesquite has to offer and what a friendly welcoming city we are.

To make that happen, the board will meet on Monday August 12 to lay out a detailed plan for the weeks leading up to the Walk, and the Volunteer Kick Off Meeting will be on Friday August 16. Please join us at the kickoff meeting and be part of this fun community project. Everyone is welcome. Invite your friends and neighbors too!!
