Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hopeful that Manchester United can finish closer to Liverpool and Manchester City this season and believes the two Premier League title challengers will not end the campaign with another high points total.
Pep Guardiola’s side narrowly beat Liverpool to the Premier League title in May as they finished on 98 points, while Jurgen Klopp’s men ended up with 97 points.
United, meanwhile, failed to secure a Champions League place and finished in sixth position with 66 points.
But Solskjaer is convinced that United supporters will see a closer title race this season.
‘The Premier League is a very competitive league,’ said Solskjaer.
‘What those two teams did last season was exceptional to get 97 and 98 points.
‘I don’t think that will happen again.
‘I think we will see a closer race this season.
‘There are six teams who want to challenge for a Champions League place, there are one or two teams underneath who would [also] like that.
‘But our aim is to focus on ourselves.
‘We have to be better, improve, make sure Man United is our only focus and I’m sure we’ll get closer to the top.’
