A drunk-driver has admitted ploughing his car into tents at a campsite and leaving one woman in a critical condition.

Jake Waterhouse, 26, said he ‘needs to be punished’ for the incident on August 19, which also injured three other campers, Llandudno Magistrates Court heard.

He had been drinking heavily before borrowing his friend’s Subaru Impreza and driving it through the Rhyd y Galen campsite in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales.

Emergency services were called to the campsite, which describes itself as a ‘tranquil getaway’, at around 2am.

Camper Anna Evans was left with ‘life threatening injuries’ as a result of his actions, prosecutor Gareth Parry said.

The other victims, a woman and two men, have since been discharged from hospital.

Waterhouse admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving otherwise in accordance with a driving licence, driving without insurance and failing to provide a breath specimen.

Carys Parry, defending, told the court that he took ‘full responsibility for the devastating events at the campsite’.

She continued: ‘He is truly and deeply remorseful for his actions. His thoughts the last two days have been with the victim of his offending and her family.

‘He accepts he is facing a lengthy sentence as a result of his actions. In his own words, he said: “I deserve to be punished.”‘

Waterhouse, of Partington, Manchester, was remanded in custody to appear at Caernarfon Crown Court on September 23.
