New York City’s Hometown BBQ Is Opening in Miami Next Month

New York City’s best barbecue restaurant Hometown BBQ — and longtime member of New York’s Eater 38 — is opening its first outpost outside of the Big Apple inside the Miami Produce Center (1200 NW 22nd Street, Suite 100) in Allapattah this September.

Led by Bill Durney, a self-taught pitmaster who was mentored by the famed Wayne Mueller of Taylor, Texas, Hometown BBQ’s rather obscure Red Hook location quickly gained a cult-like following since opening in 2013, garnering hour plus waits for its take on barbecue that boasts traditional and not-so-traditional international flavors.

Hometown BBQ Miami will be set up a bit differently than its New York City counterpart, but will still serve up plenty of the restaurant’s popular dishes like the Vietnamese chicken wings, beef ribs, brisket, lamb belly bahn mi, jerk pork belly, and smoked turkey. During the daytime, diners at the Miami location can order at the counter and their food will then be brought to them at their table when its ready — helping avoid those aforementioned long lines. At night time, the restaurant will offer full dinner service complete with waiters, four nightly wood-fired specials like whole lamb bone-in lamb shoulder and smoked confit whole chicken in addition to its comprehensive barbecue menu, and even reservation options (which the New York location famously doesn’t offer).

As for the space, the Miami outpost will purposely not look like the New York location. “My idea of the space wasn’t for it to look like some guy from Disney came in and tried to re-create my restaurant from New York,” adds Durney. “What I wanted to do in Miami is make it feel more modern, more linear, more cutting-edge, but also have this real simplistic feel to it. It’s not that relic 100-year-old barbecue facility that you walk into in Texas. I love the contrast.”

In addition to the modern feel, the Miami location will even boast a outdoor patio filled with plenty of greenery and a full bar, with a large emphasis on natural wines and local beers. As for TVs — the NYC location is a popular spot to watch sporting events — Durney hasn’t decided whether or not the Miami location will have them, but adds he already bought a projector so it can air large sporting events.

The restaurant is set to debut to the public on September 17, and once open it’ll be open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday.
