It’s Friday in Milwaukee, and here are some things we think you should know about as the nation grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic.

1. Safe & Sound virtual plug-in: Friday, Aug. 7
Safe & Sound is hosting a twice-weekly virtual plug-in every Monday and Friday from now until September. The plug-ins feature conversations with staff members, residents and elected officials. This week’s plug-in is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7. To join the conversation, click here.
2. MPS celebrates graduates: Saturday, Aug. 8
MPS seniors and their families, along with administrators, faculty and school board members, will celebrate graduation during a virtual ceremony from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8. READ: Showing off Milwaukee’s beautiful, resilient Class of 2020
3. Community giveaway day: Saturday, Aug. 8
The nonprofit Community Cry is hosting a community giveaway day at the Church of Milwaukee, 1501 W. Ring St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8. There will be free haircuts and hair braiding, a clothing giveaway and refreshments. Volunteers are needed and donations are welcome.
4. Día de arte en el jardín/Art day in the people’s garden: Saturday, Aug. 8
Vecinos Unidos or United Neighbors is hosting a día de arte en el jardín or art day in the people’s garden. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 1102 S. 21st St. Children and adults are invited to write messages of love and hope on ceramics, which will be used to decorate the garden.
5. Liberate MKE and partners host block party: Saturday, Aug. 8
Liberate MKE, Metcalfe Park Community Bridges and the Milwaukee Freedom Fund are having a block party at Metcalfe Park Rising, 2600 N. 34th St., from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8. The block party is a chance to celebrate Blackness, learn what it means to defund the police, discuss violence prevention methods, create art, enjoy refreshments and more. Masks are required.
