'It Was Really Scary': Car Crashes Into St. Paul's Hubbs Center For Lifelong Learning

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Classes are canceled at a St. Paul school until Monday after a driver crashed through the lobby.

Her car narrowly missed several staff members at the Hubbs Center for Lifelong Learning Thursday morning, located on the corner of University Avenue West and Oxford Street West.

Moses Sanchez was stunned to see the aftermath of the crash at the school where he learned to speak English.

"I used to come here and the teachers are really awesome," Sanchez said. "I just pray for the people who were there because you can imagine, it was really scary."

Just before classes began at 8:30 a.m., a car came crashing through the school's lobby, coming to a stop near the reception desk.

"It was a surprise to everyone. We literally had someone at the front desk, we had staff members who had seconds earlier walked through," said Kevin Burns, director of the office of communications for St. Paul Public Schools.

Amazingly, no one was hurt.

"Really, seconds either side of this incident and this story could have turned out much, much worse," Burns said.

St. Paul police say the cause of the crash appears to be inexperience, not impairment. They ticketed the 25-year-old woman behind the wheel for an instructional permit violation, and not driving with due care.

While most students are on summer break, the Hubbs Center caters towards adults, offering a variety of classes.

"These are adults that comes to this facility to further their careers, further their paths, and it's a really vital program within St. Paul Public Schools," Burns said.

There is still a big hole on the side of this building, but district officials say the structure and foundation wasn't damaged in this crash, so classes will be back in session on Monday.
