Real Salt Lake: Jefferson Savarino and a European destiny

Newcastle United and West Ham United are showing interest in signing Real Salt Lake midfielder Jefferson Savarino. He is destined for a European move sometime soon.

Venezuelan international Jefferson Savarino has made the most of his time in Major League Soccer. The 22-year-old midfielder has played three seasons with Real Salt Lake and has impressed many around the globe with his ability.

With his success interest from big-name clubs in Europe has come, the two most recent names to surface being West Ham United and Newcastle United. A Premier League move would be a huge step in Savarino’s career and one that would show the continued growth and development of MLS.

At the moment, Savarino is having perhaps his best season to date. He has found himself in a continuous starting role with Real Salt Lake and is currently playing with Venezuela at the Copa America in Brazil.

With three goals and one assist in 13 games, Savarino has played a huge role in keeping RSL alive in the Western Conference playoff hunt. Although his stats may not be eye-catching, he’s a hard-working midfielder who helps with his ball ability on the ball and propensity to score a stunner.

If Savarino finds his way to Newcastle United, he will be joining forces with fellow former MLS star Miguel Almiron.

The Paraguayan international had a similar path to that of Savarino’s, shining in MLS for two years before securing his big-money European move. These two players are a perfect example of how MLS is a place where players can display their talent and make it to a higher level of competition.

Savarino is one for the future, and much like Almiron, he could have a long career ahead in the Premier League. A move to either Newcastle or West Ham may come as a surprise to some, but the history of these two clubs scouting players globally is nothing new. Fellow Venezuelan international Saloman Rondon just finished a loan spell with Newcastle where he thrived.

Despite the fact they could be losing one of their top players, Real Salt Lake should be happy to have seen Savarino move on to a bigger club. The club has done a very good job at developing talent and this is just another case of their success.

Savarino will no doubt be a fan favorite for years to come. Even if a move does not happen this summer, it will only be a matter of time before he makes the European jump, and it will be the betterment of him, Real Salt Lake and MLS.
