Bridge sealed, opened again in Dimapur

An important bridge link between Dimapur and Bor-Lengri in Karbi-Anglong, Assam was sealed by the Dimapur district administration on May 11. One of many such links along Nagaland’s Dimapur and Assam’s Karbi-Anglong districts, the bridge from Duncan Basti to Bor-Lengri, is used by hundreds of commuters daily.

According to the police, it was sealed on Monday evening as there is already a Home Ministry directive to seal all inter-state borders on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, it was opened only a few hours later. There were conflicting accounts as to the reason for opening the bridge again. Residents in the vicinity said that the bamboo barricade set up earlier in the evening was removed by the police after Naga public living on the other side of the border raised an outcry.

Police personnel stationed at the bridge told The Morung Express that the bamboo barricade was temporarily removed on account of a medical emergency. “The bridge will be closed again,” claimed a police man on duty at the site.
The Deputy Commissioner, when contacted, said that barricading the bridge was more of a measure to restrict free-flow of people from both sides of the border.
