Mizoram chief minister, Zoramthanga on August 20 urged the Centre to upgrade the Lengpui Airport, the lone airport in Mizoram.
An official statement said that the chief minister, who is in the national capital, called on Union Civil Aviation minister, Hardeep Singh Puri and other officials on Tuesday at Puri's office conference hall.
Both the leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including additional flight services for Mizoram and upgrade of Lengpui Airport, the statement also said.
Puri on his part, promised the chief minister to take up the matter for further action.
Zoramthanga was accompanied by Mizoram chief secretary, Lalnunmawia Chuaungo and Principal Consultant for Civil Aviation, Wing Commander, Joe Lalhmingliana and other officials.
Meanwhile, Wing Commander Joe Lalhmingliana said that three airlines- Go Air, Indigo and Alliance Air will start their operations in different sectors connecting Mizoram from September.
He also said that that Go Air proposed to operate AIRBUS-320 daily service on Kolkata-Guwahati-Aizawl sector from September 23.
Lalhmingliana also said the other two airlines Indigo and Alliance Air are applying clearance from Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA).
“Once the two airlines obtained clearance from DGCA they will officially intimate to the Mizoram government about their schedules, timings and sectors,” he said.
Though it is not known when the two airlines will start operation, they are planning to start from October, he added. He further said that Indigo has proposed to operate AIRBUS-320 and Alliance Air will operate ATR 72, which can accommodate 74 passengers.
Mizoram has been facing air-link problems after Jet Airways withdrew operation from the state in February this year.
The state has existing air service on Aizawl-Kolkatta-Imphal sector, which is being operated by Air India.
In June, the state government had requested Indigo airlines to start operation on the Aizawl to Delhi and Aizawl to Guwahati sectors.
