The Nagaland state government has issued an order directing government employees to desist from criticizing policies of the government. The order from the Chief Secretary was issued on October 21, copies of which were endorsed to all AHoDs of state government departments, the DCs and to the local media through the Directorate of Information & Public Relations.

“It has come to notice that some Government servants have been found criticizing policies and actions of the Govemment by expressing their views / opinions or by making statements in the press, social media and in public meetings,” the directive read. It said that it violates Rule 22 of the Nagaland Government Servants Conduct Rules, 1968.

It further directed all government servants to “take note and not indulge in any act which may be construed as violation of such Rules, thereby making him/her liable for disciplinary action.”

In another development, the Nagaland Chief Secretary has directed all Deputy Commissioners and administrative officers to “remain at their respective places of posting and within their jurisdiction till further orders.” The directive though not issued publicly was circulating on social media.

It also directed the recall of any administrative officer “not available in station and not on medical/maternity leave already sanctioned.”

A similar directive was issued by the Nagaland DGP informing the deferment of the annual Police duty-cum-sports meet which was scheduled for November.

This comes in the backdrop of the DGP issuing a directive on October 4 cancelling the leaves of state police personnel with effect from October 14 till further notice.

The state police and bureaucratic chief could not be reached for comment on the directives issued. Other government officials though confirmed receiving the orders.

The developments came as the Nagaland State Governor held a discussion on the security scenario with the Chief Secretary, the state Police Chief and security agencies on October 21.
