SIT set up to probe Dimapur shootings

DIMAPUR, JUNE 7 (MExN): Nagaland Police has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the series of shooting incidents that occurred outside the residences of NDPP General Secretary, Abu Metha and MLA Sharigain Longkumer on the nights of June 5 and 6. 

On Friday, Nagaland Director General of Police (DGP), TJ Longkumer held a meeting with the Dimapur Commissioner of Police along with senior officers from the district police to assess the recent incidents.

The SIT will be headed by a senior officer in the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police. “Reinforcement of manpower in the form of IRBs has also been ordered to deter further erosion of law and order,” a press note from the PRO informed. 

The DGP has also approved the provision of fifty new motorcycles to form a motorcycle squad to assist the already existing machinery in place in the District. “This will enhance mobility and speedy reaction to any contingencies,” it was added. 

Meanwhile, forty new communication sets have also been sanctioned for this purpose. Further, to enhance the firepower capacity of the district force, fifty Glock-17 pistols have been provided. 

The DGP stressed that all these new assets, manpower and new security network should be implemented within the week. It was also decided to reinforce the beat patrolling system within the district for more effective policing. The DGP also sanctioned Rs.5 lakhs to procure new high capacity CCTVs which will be placed at strategic locations to aid intelligence collection and also assist investigation. “It may be noted that images from CCTVs installed in various locations have thrown light in zeroing down of the vehicles allegedly used by suspected miscreants in the firing incidents,” the PRO informed. 

A decision to establish a new police assistant/beat post in the vicinity of NRL Petrol Pump, 2 ½ Mile to provide security to the public was also approved during the meeting. It meanwhile appealed to the public to come forward with any information that would assist and aid in the investigation of the various cases. 

“Suitable monetary rewards would be given to any responsible citizens who can divulge credible information/inputs which can lead to arrest or prevent commission of further cognizable crimes. Anonymity of the informant to be ensured on receiving of any credible information,” it added. 

Gov, Deputy CM condemns 

Nagaland State Governor, PB Acharya alongwith Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister, Y Patton today condemned the shooting incidents in the residences of NDPP Secretary General, Abu Metha and NDPP legislator Sharingain Longkumer on the nights of June 5 and 6. 

Governor Acharya stated that “such violence has no place in society” and expressed hope that the machineries of the State Government will leave no stone unturned to bring the perpetrator to book at the earliest.  He added that the people of Nagaland were yearning for peace and no one should disturb the peaceful atmosphere prevailing in the State. 

Deputy Chief Minister, Y Patton, who is also in charge of the Home Department said that the government has taken serious note on the serial firing incidents. The Deputy CM, in a press note today, condemned such “acts of terror” and urged law enforcing agencies to seriously investigate the matter and bring to book the perpetrators, “peaceful atmosphere prevailing in the state cannot be vitiated,” Patton added.
