BOBCAT CALENDAR 1928: The Dyche Era Opens in Strong Fashion

Montana State posts another winning record in Rocky Mountain Conference play

92 Years Ago – 1928
June 5: Each day leading to Montana State's 2020 season opener, scheduled for September 5, we will look at the season as many years ago as it is days until kickoff of the Gold Rush game.

92 YEARS AGO – There was no way of knowing on September 29, 1928, when the Bobcats took the field at Idaho, that something special was beginning. That day marked Schube Dyche's first game as Montana State's head coach - the first of 12 seasons that covered two separate stints, the most by an Bobcat coach, and of 96 games, second-most in school history. The Cats stunned Idaho 15-13 that day, the team's first win in four tries against the Vandals. Idaho had outscored Montana State 69-12 in the first three games of the series. As was the case for Montana State in the late '20s, the team's 4-4-1 record masked a largely successful season. The Bobcats lost their next two games (at Colorado College and Nebraska, the latter game in which Max Worthington raced most of the length of the field for a touchdown on a fumble return), beat BYU and Wyoming, and earned a tie against Montana. That 0-0 game marked the first Cat-Griz game Montana State didn't lose since 1919, and set the stage for a thrilling 1929 Copper Bowl. Montana State lost its chance at a state championship when Carroll defeated Montana State in Sheridan, Wyoming.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN STANDINGS: 3-2 in RMC, a 6th-place finish and one of only six conference teams (out of out of 12) with a winning league record.  Playing as many as five Rocky Mountain Conference games for only the second time – and for one of only three times in this configuration of the league – Montana State capped three straight seasons of at least three conference wins, its best stretch of seasons before World War II. The Bobcats topped Northern Colorado, BYU and Wyoming at home, and lost at Utah State and Colorado College.
