Mesquite residents rejoiced with Starbucks staff and management at the grand opening of the new establishment on Monday, Jan. 7. The newly opened Starbucks location is in the J.L. Bowler Plaza near Smith’s supermarket.

Mesquite Chamber of Commerce CEO Carol Poulson along with Mesquite Mayor Allan Litman participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony with Starbucks Store Manager David Moffitt.

According to Moffitt the popular coffee chain has seen great success in the first week of business.
“We’ve actually beat our projections,” he said. “Obviously the ribbon cutting helped. There were probably 75 people who showed up to that; so it was pretty cool.”

Moffitt, who was initially hired to manage a St. George location, said that he transferred to Mesquite because he thought it was a good opportunity to open the new store. He said that he believes the previous Mesquite store failed to thrive because it relied only on the Starbucks name.
“They weren’t super involved in the community and that’s something that we want to do differently,” Moffitt said. “We want to get really involved in the community. That’s why we joined the chamber of commerce and we’re going to partner with the high school.”

The new store will feature a community wall for Virgin Valley High School where, Moffitt said, they will hang jerseys and sports schedules.
“So that’s my goal, to be involved in the community and not just rely on the green siren,” Moffitt said. “It brings a ton of business but in a small town like this we still need to make sure that the excitement is there.”

Moffitt said that the store offers a rewards program that can be accessed on the Starbucks app. It allows customers to earn free items and order ahead of time.
“What’s really cool about [the app] is you can register for the rewards card and once you spend $100 you become a Gold member,” he said. “And when you become a Gold member you get two stars for every dollar that you spend. After 125 stars you get a free item.”

Moffitt said that one of the most popular drinks sold so far at the Mesquite location are Frappuccinos. He attributes this to the store’s close proximity to Virgin Valley High School. Moffitt said that he expects sales of the cold beverages to increase even more as temperatures rise during spring and summer.

The manager also expects the store’s early success to continue for the foreseeable future due in part to community support.
“I’ve opened different restaurants for different companies and I’ve never been in a community where literally every single person I talk to tells me how excited they are for this to open,” Moffitt said. “I think we’re going to far surpass all expectations for a long time to come.”
