2019 Mountain West Football Top 52 Players: #1, Boise State STUD Curtis Weaver

The top spot on our countdown of the Mountain West’s best once again belongs to Boise State. This time, though, it’s all about defense.

Another Bronco lands at number one.

If our countdown of the Mountain West’s best players this fall has revealed nothing else, the conference has an awful lot of talent. It’s not easy to climb our list, let alone to the #1 spot, but that’s the kind of career that Boise State STUD Curtis Weaver has had so far, cementing himself as the Mountain West’s premier defender and, among our staff, as its best player period.

Since we began this exercise at our old digital digs back in 2013, the honor had always gone to an offensive player, making Weaver the first defensive player to top our list. He has been a first-team all-Mountain West selection for two straight years and it’s not hard to see why. In 2018, he finished second among Mountain West defenders with 9.5 sacks and 15 tackles for loss, accounting for 12.5% of Boise State’s team Havoc Rate. Consequently, he has received quite a bit of hype as someone who could declare for next year’s NFL Draft and some analysts, like CBS Sports’s Chris Trapasso, have gone so far as to declare that Weaver is this year’s best prospect from the Group of 5.

Still just a junior, there is the chance that Weaver could stick around for two more years and, well, rewrite a lot of Boise State’s record book if he wanted to. Regardless, however, Weaver is a must-watch player who will be critical to the Broncos’ hopes of reclaiming the Mountain West title.
