An Alachua County High School Senior from Buchholz High School beat nearly 2,000 students from around the world to be one of the top math and science students in the nation.

Helena Jiang will compete in this year’s 2020 Regeneron Science Talent Search in Washington, D.C.

She says, “I was very excited to hear that I was a top-300 finalist in the first place, so I really wasn’t expecting a top 40, but I’m very excited about what’s to come.

Her math teacher Will Frazer says she’s the most accomplished science student he’s ever had. "I picture how she should be this stressful person but she always looks so happy and bubbly," says Frazer.

According to Helena, the competition is a great opportunity to grow as a scientist and she looks forward to being around leading scientists, but like many other high school seniors, Helena’s excited to see her friends. She goes on to say, “We’ve already created a Facebook chat for all the finalists, and just being surrounded by the intellectuality of the people, it’s incredible. Hearing everyone else’s projects and what they’ve accomplished so far is truly amazing.”

Helena’s project consists of a censor she created to help people in developing countries tell whether or not the water is safe to drink.

If Helena wins the competition, she can receive up to $1.8 million in awards.
