Washington, D.C. (WHAM) - Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling for Congress to initiate impeachment hearings for President Donald Trump.

The Democrat senator from New York posted a series of tweets Wednesday afternoon in response to the statements read by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

In her tweets, Gillibrand said Mueller expects Congress to "exercise its constitutional authority and take steps that he could not."

Last week, House Republicans warned against proceeding down what they insist is a politically perilous path.

“I think the American people want us to move on from these endless investigations and let’s get to work,” said Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill.

A growing number of Democrats in the House have been pushing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to move toward impeachment hearings over the last couple weeks.

Understandably, President Trump has pushed back against the notion that his presidency warrant impeachment. He cited his work on "having created perhaps the greatest Economy in our Country's history" among other political decisions he has made.
