Birmingham Police find remains of Kamille McKinney

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) — UPDATE: Wed. Oct. 23 - 2:33 p.m. - The Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiners office confirmed this afternoon that the remains found Tuesday night belong to Kamille "Cupcake" McKinney.

Her body was discovered at a landfill in Gardendale at 5:16 p.m. The cause of death, as well as the exact time and place of her death, remain under investigation.

Information will be given to Birmingham police by the coroner's office after the autopsy is completed. They will then decide whether or not to release those details to the public.

ORIGINAL -- Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith announced the police and the FBI have recovered remains of a three year-old child which they believe belong to missing Kamille McKinney.

The remains were found inside of a dumpster within a landfill in Gardendale on Tuesday evening. Police have been searching through 12 tons of trash collected in the area for the past several days. The dumpster originated in the area near Woodside Condominiums in Center Point, where Patrick Stallworth, a person of interest, was taken into custody on October 13.

Stallworth and Derick Brown will be charged with capital murder and kidnapping on Thursday Oct. 24, according to the District Attorney's Office. They are both in custody. Birmingham police will continue to investigate this as a homicide case.

McKinney was last seen around 8:30 PM on October 12 at Tom Brown Village Housing while attending a birthday party. A multistate amber alert was issued and a 10 day search ensued.

Authorities searched many locations throughout the Birmingham area, including Tom Brown Village, two apartment complexes in Center Point, Marland Apartments on Jefferson Ave and an area in East Birmingham.

Chief Smith says their investigation has not revealed any connection between the suspects and McKinney’s family. He believes the suspects planned the crime and acted upon the opportunity to take a young child.

“It only takes a split second. We can no longer assume that everyone is a part of the village that’s trying to raise the child. We cannot take those things for granted,” says the police chief.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin assures the community “the perpetrator of this crime will be brought to justice and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
