An inquiry was ordered into alleged discharge of septic tank water by the Indian Air Force (IAF) into Elephant Falls in Upper Shillong.
Elephant Falls is one of the most visited tourist spots in Meghalaya.
East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner Matsiewdor War Nongbri said an inquiry was conducted in this regard on Sunday by a magistrate.
“It is a fact that the water was dirty but we are waiting for the report,” said East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner Nongbri.
She added that the State Pollution Control Board has also been informed to check the condition of the water in the waterfall.
Nongbri said necessary action would be taken as per law.
A picture of yellow-coloured dirty water flowing in the Elephant Falls was circulated on the social media asking the Meghalaya government to take action against the IAF men to task.
Elephant Falls is one of the most popular falls close to the Shillong city.
The Elephant Falls was referred to as ‘Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew’ by the local Khasi people, which means ‘The Three Step Waterfalls’, as these falls consist of three mesmerising falls in succession.
