Railways is all set to get each and every capital city of the Northeast connected with each other by 2022.

The department has chalked out plans to bring Sikkim within its ambit in three years time from now.

So far, three capital cities of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Tripura are well-connected with each other through the broad gauge.

Work is in progress to connect Shillong, Imphal, Kohima, and Aizawl via broad gauge and the work is expected to be over by 2020.

Sources from the railway department said that land acquisition issues have delayed the project in Sikkim.

“Project to lay broad gauge line between Sivok to Rangpo was sanctioned in 2008-09. However, owing to land acquisition issues it got delayed,” the source said.

The railways is hopeful of completing the project within the stipulated time frame.
