The election of new Speaker of the 10th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is likely to take place in the upcoming Autumn Session of the Assembly which will begin on September 6, 2019.

Assembly Commissioner and Secretary, Andrew Simons on Wednesday said the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the Assembly will be held on Friday to finalise the agenda and number of days for the Autumn Session.

The BAC meeting will be chaired by Deputy Speaker, Timothy D. Shira.

The Assembly has to elect new Speaker in place of Shella MLA, Dr Donkupar Roy who passed away on July 28.

Late Dr Donkupar, who was the president of the United Democratic Party (UDP), was elected as Speaker of the Assembly on March 12, 2018.

He was the first MLA of the State who passed away while in office as Speaker.

Earlier, the UDP said the Speaker’s post should go to the party since the post was held by its leader, Dr Donkupar Roy.

The UDP is part of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government led by the National People’s Party (NPP).

However, partners of the MDA government said the matter should be discussed in the MDA meeting, on who should be the candidate for the election to the Speaker’s post.
