Newcastle hit roadblock in £36m deal, Toon still confident in club-record transfer – report

|

Newcastle’s potential club-record transfer for TSG Hoffenheim forward Joelinton has hit a roadblock, with the Magpies’ contract terms not to the player’s satisfaction, according to The Northern Echo.

The deal for the Brazilian to move to Tyneside is believed to be setting United back an initial £36million, although the figure could rise significantly with the local paper reporting a further £12million is understood to have been negotiated via various add-ons.

Joelinton looks set to leave his current Bundesliga side this summer, after they stated earlier in the week that the striker was sidelined from their pre-season plans while he negotiated his move to the Premier League.

Newcastle are believed to be hopeful of the 22-year-old agreeing to a four-year contract at St James’ Park, given the sizable outlay they are thought to have agreed, but the striker would prefer a three-year arrangement.

The 6 ft 1 striker had agreed to a five-year contract with Hoffenheim upon his arrival in European football back in 2015, and extended his tenure with the Rhein-Neckar-Arena natives last November for a further two years, taking his contractual obligations in the Bundesliga to the summer of 2022.

His most recent renewal in Germany reportedly saw the Brazilian agree to a £7,417-a-week contract, although it would be expected that Joelinton and his representatives will push for a more lucrative deal with us.

Despite the recent impasse in negotiations, The Northern Echo add that Hoffenheim chiefs expect Joelinton to secure his move to St James’ Park by the end of the week, in a feeling shared by United executives.

Steve Bruce has left discussions with Joelinton’s representatives to Managing Director Lee Charnley, after agreeing with the Toon chief that offensive reinforcements are a must.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss wants another striker brought to the club following Joelinton’s arrival, too, and has been linked with a move for Southampton forward Charlie Austin.
