Actor Piper Perabo will be at the Statehouse on Tuesday to protest funding cuts to the Toms River school district by Gov. Phil Murphy.

“I’m joining students and community from the New Jersey public school district I went to, to stand up for the state funding they need,” Perabo said in a tweet. “This Tuesday in Trenton. Join us.”

Perabo has become increasingly active in New Jersey politics.  She raised money and canvassed door-to-door to help Rep. Andy Kim (D-Marlton) unseat two-term Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-Toms River) in New Jersey’s 3rd district last year.

The award-winning actor has also been a staunch critic of President Donald Trump, and fought the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018.

Organizers of the Rally to Save Toms River march at the governor’s office said that Murphy told a Toms River parent on a recent call-in show that “we cannot allow systems like yours to be hung out to dry.”

“We’re holding him to his word because, right now, we are being hung out to dry,” organizers of the rally said.  “After massive staff cuts this year and facing the grim reality of losing more staff, all sports, all extracurriculars, full-day kindergarten, and more in 2020, our community has had enough.”

Toms River has requested $4.4 million in emergency aid.

“We’re continuing our fight to restore millions of dollars already lost and to prevent $90 million in cumulative state aid cuts,” rally organizers said.  “We cannot sit idly by while our exemplary schools and proud communities are destroyed.”
