Louis Armstrong International Airport on Friday launched a plan to try to prevent the spread of coronavirus as travelers begin making a slow return.

They’ll see new signage that promotes physical distancing of at least six feet and proper hand washing, Plexiglass barriers that provide a shield between the public and workers, limited occupancy on elevators, and frequent sanitization of high touch areas, a news release said.

The airport estimates that passenger activity is down 90% for the month of June compared to the same month last year. Domestic flights are still operating, but international flights have been suspended.

Passengers are “strongly encouraged to wear face coverings or masks throughout the terminal,” the release said. All employees that interact with the public will wear face coverings or masks. Many airlines are requiring ticketed passengers to wear a face covering throughout check-in, boarding and during the flight.

At the TSA security checkpoint, passengers will need to wash or sanitize their hands before and after going through. TSA is currently allowing only one liquid hand sanitizer container of up to 12 ounces in carry-on bags. The sanitizer will be screened separately. Food is required to be removed from luggage and put through the scanner in a clear plastic bag.

Restaurants, lounges and stores at the airport will be reopened in phases.
