New Orleans lost 1,500 construction jobs from May to June

The New Orleans area lost 1,500 construction jobs from May to June, according to an analysis of government figures released Wednesday by Associated General Contractors of America.

The study shows that the New Orleans-Metairie area construction employment totaled 23,300 last month, a 6% decrease from May. The metro area ranks 356th out of the 358 U.S. metro areas studied.

There was a 20% year-over-year drop in construction employment in the New Orleans-Metairie area. It lost 6,000 jobs between June 2019 and June 2020 and ranked 336th among all metro areas.

Statewide, there was a 14% drop in construction unemployment from June 2019 to June 2020, with 19,700 jobs lost. Baton Rouge led the way, losing 7,100 jobs. It was followed by Houma-Thibodaux, Lafayette, Lake Charles, New Orleans-Metairie and Shreveport-Bossier City.

Construction employment was down nationwide year-over year, decreasing 62% over the same time period.
