Rhode Island Denies Permit to Build Invenergy Gas Power Plant

A $1 billion Invenergy plan to build a natural gas-powered plant in Rhode Island to sell electricity in New England was denied a permit by state regulators June 20—the latest setback for the embattled proposal.

Invenergy Thermal Development LLC of Chicago needed the permit in order to build a 1,000-megawatt natural gas-to-steam plant in Burrillville, R.I. Invenergy has said New England needs the extra power, but the project has drawn opposition from local officials and environmental organizations.
