A man died when he was struck by a vehicle on the M1 in South Yorkshire.

The southbound carriageway between J36 at Tankersley and J35A at Stocksbridge was shut for about eight hours after the crash, at about 05:30 GMT.

The 62-year-old victim, from Sheffield, was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed, said South Yorkshire Police.

The motorway has since re-opened following an investigation at the scene.

Officers are appealing for witnesses and drivers with dashcam footage to contact them.

Traffic was stuck between the junctions for several hours, Highways England said.

There was also a tailback of about 5 miles (8km) to J38 at Haigh.

Motorists were diverted off the motorway via the A61 and A616 and had been advised to plan their route and avoid the area if possible.
