A mum who drowned after she jumped into the sea to rescue her son and his friend has been named locally as Danielle Chilvers.
The 37-year-old tragically died after witnesses said she spotted that the boys had got into difficulty in a sea kayak off the coast in Norfolk yesterday.
Danielle was better known as Dani and is believed to have lived in Norwich.
Witnesses pulled Dani from the water and tried to resuscitate her before paramedics arrived but she was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.
The boys in the kayak were brought safely back to shore by holidaymakers.
Dani was staying with her son, who is believed to be aged around 14, at the Poplar Farm campsite beside the sand dunes at Waxham.
Campsite manager Kyle Reeve described her death as "an absolute tragedy".
He said: "This whole coastline is notorious for rip tides. We have signs up at the beach entrances warning of the risk.
"The water moves at huge speed through gaps when channels appear between sandbanks. Most professional swimmers cannot out swim them."
Another witness said in a social media post: "We were there. It was horrific to watch. She wanted to save the two boys who had lost control of a sea kayak. She was next to me in the water, then went in head on (and) was caught in the rip.
"I feel for the children and family who watched it all happen. We are traumatised ourselves,let alone the family. Wish there was some kind of life guard on the beaches at Waxham. It took too long for them to respond from Sea Palling."
Another Facebook post said: "So unfortunate for Danni, bless her heart for trying to save her boy.
"We need to spread the word that you MUST WEAR A BUOYANCY AID... And Waxham needs a lifeguard because the coastguard took too long to turn up. I was on the phone for 20 mins before they arrived!!!!
"So tragic. Hearts to everyone. This is utterly devastating for everyone xxxxxxx"
Flowers have been placed in her memory at the bottom of the seawall on the beach.
