It's been a grim 24 hours for anyone who doesn't want to see the Tories decimate public services for another five years.

After Boris Johnson won a resounding majority in yesterday's general election , there has been little to be cheerful about.

So deadpan Sky News presenter Adam Boulton has been praised for raising smiles after the man who got us all in this mess - former PM David Cameron - shared his thoughts on TV today.

Cameron, who led the Tories in government between 2010 and 2016, gave his backing to Johnson in an interview in the street.

But as the camera cut back to Boulton in the studio, he had a hilarious observation.

Cameron said: "That's the most important thing of all, winning the trust of people who have put their trust in us, many of them for the first time, and Boris will have my full support while he does that."

Boulton humorously observed: "Well I don't know why he's talking to a tree."

It was shared on Twitter by one user who wrote: "Top bantz from Adam Boulton."

James Brownsell wrote: "This is the first thing today to have made me laugh. Thanks."

And Paulette Campbell wrote: "That has been the only thing that has made me smile about the election today. Thank you - needed it."

Earlier today Mr Johnson said it was time for the country to go through a period of "closure" after a divisive period since the European referendum in 2016.

He told Remain voters he wanted them to know a "One Nation" Conservative Government would "never ignore" the "positive feelings of warmth and sympathy towards the other nations of Europe".

The Prime Minister added: "I frankly urge everyone on either side of what are, after three-and-a-half years, a frequently arid argument, I urge everyone to find closure and to let the healing begin."
