Breaking news out of Sydney as a Qantas Airbus A330-200 faced an evacuation after an inflight failure. The A330-200 was on its way to Perth when the pilots decided to return to Sydney.At the gate in Sydney, the captain ordered an evacuation, with some passengers disembarking via slides.

The incident

Qantas announced that this incident affected QF575 from Sydney to Perth on December 15, 2019. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft suffered a hydraulic issue and the pilots made the decision to return to Sydney.

The aircraft returned for a safe landing at Sydney. However, once at the gate, the captain decided to evacuate the aircraft.

Some of the aircraft's slides were deployed while some passengers disembarked through normal exits.

One passenger posted images of the aircraft on Twitter:

Qantas stated that the aircraft did not require an emergency landing. Rather, the aircraft was able to make a safe landing. No injuries or fatalities were reported by the airline. Engineers are examining the aircraft. Although, as of now, there is no new information in regards to what exactly happened onboard nor what will come of the aircraft involved.

What happened onboard QF575?

While Qantas did not release any specifics as to what happened onboard, passengers explained the incident on social media. One passenger said that the cabin filled with smoke just prior to the evacuation order.

The Airbus A330-200

This particular aircraft had a capacity of up to 271 passengers. However, Qantas did not include any information as to how many people were onboard the aircraft when the incident occurred.

Qantas regularly flies an Airbus A330 between Perth and Sydney. From Sydney to Perth, the flight is blocked at just under five hours. Alongside Qantas, low-cost Tigerair and Jetstar operate narrowbodies on this route. Meanwhile, Virgin Australia also flies an A330 on some flights between Sydney and Perth.
