Devon Debenhams store to reopen - but two remain closed

The Torquay outlet reopens on June 15

Debenhams enters administration after coronavirus shutdown

Debenhams' two largest stores in Devon will remain closed - despite plans to reopen the Torquay outlet on June 15.

The retailer was forced to shut all of its branches across the UK in March in line with government restrictions over the coronavirus outbreak.

It also recently entered administration and was forced to permanently close 22 of its stores - including one in Truro.

Large outlets in Exeter and Plymouth will remain closed on June 15, with a reopening date yet to be confirmed.

Last month, it was announced that Torbay Council has bought the prime department store site in Torquay as part of its plans to regenerate Torbay’s town centres and help boost the local economy.

The landmark building on the Strand in Torquay was bought 'for an undisclosed sum' after Debenhams went into administration.

A number of social distancing measures and hygiene procedures will be in place when the Torquay store reopens.

Steven Cook, managing director at Debenhams, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming customers back to our stores in the coming weeks.
