What the Met Office says about plunging sub zero temperatures hitting Wales this week

It could hit -5C in some parts

Frosty, cold and dry with sunny spells - take a look at the latest Met Office weather forecast

The Met Office has warned that a cold snap will see temperatures continue to drop to below-freezing in Wales next week.

Bitterly cold temperatures hitting as low as -5C are expected on Monday and Tuesday as Wales continues to be affected by high pressure.

According to the Met Office , this system means the climate is more settled and the lack of cloud enables temperatures to plummet - especially during the night.

On Saturday night it fell to below freezing in many parts of Wales with people waking up to a foggy and frosty Sunday morning.

The coldest area was Trawsgoed near Aberystwyth where it hit -4.9C and Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said it's likely to be just as cold again on Sunday night.

He said: "The high pressure means the weather will be more settled and clear skies and light wind are the perfect ingredients for cold weather.

"It could get to -5C in coastal areas and inland towards the south east and north west. In Cardiff on Saturday night it was -2.2C and in Usk 3.4C and it could get a degree or so colder."

However, it should begin to get milder as the week goes on as clouds start to move in - although temperatures will remain in the single digits.

Mr Burkill added: "The high pressure isn’t going anywhere anytime soon but on Monday night into Tuesday we are likely to see cloud move in with a few spots of rain.

"This means temperatures shouldn’t drop so low during the night but they will struggle in the daytime and stay in the single figures maybe hitting 8 or 9C."

Wednesday is likely to be a fairly cloudy day with a few patches of rain and it will be around 8C in most parts of Wales. Overnight it will drop to around 4 or 5C and Thursday is looking similarly cloudy but potentially brighter.

Despite the freezing temperatures, the Met Office said it's unlikely Wales will see any snow this week.

Mr Burkill explained: "It’s looking pretty unlikely that it will snow because it’s going to be dry.

"We might see some rain later in the week but that will be light and the clouds mean it won’t be as cold. You could see some light snow or sleet on Snowdon but nothing much more than that."
