A controversial plan to build a Co-op store on an eyesore site close to Conwy castle has been withdrawn.

The application for the new store had been submitted by the Llandudno Investment Partnership, which is a collaboration between Mostyn Estates and local businessman Peter Ormerod.

The earmarked site on Llanrwst Road has been empty for more than a decade and was once home to Billington's Garage, which was demolished in 2012.

But the Co-op plan came under fire from heritage groups as well as sparking concerns it could force the closure of the nearby Gyffin Convenience Store.

Conwy county council was inundated with dozens of letters of opposition to the scheme.

Developers withdrew the application to look at some of the issues raised.

It is understood developers are currently considering whether to resubmit a new application.
