Labour voters in the party's remaining heartlands have shared their devastation after the Tories surged to a strong parliamentary majority.
The bookies expected a victory for Boris Johnson but the 10pm exit poll predicted a bleak night for Jeremy Corbyn.
The poll proved to be startlingly accurate and Johnson now commands a majority the size of Margaret Thatcher's in the 1980s, reports the Liverpool Echo.
With 364 seats for the Conservatives and 203 for Labour , with just two results to come, people across the region have been sharing their concerns, fears and a bleak outlook for the future as Merseyside braces itself for five more years - at least - of Tory rule.
Worries about the NHS were top of the list of concerns.
Julie Miller said: "Omg!! Say bye to our NHS this country is ruined. We are on our knees."
Bob Hatton said: "So true all of people will be regretting they put Johnson and co back in after the NHS is sold off."
Kelly Evans said: "People can't afford their rent/ mortgage.
"People are living off food banks (even the employed).
"People are losing their homes...
"Just like with Thatcher, Liverpool will be one of the cities to suffer!!!!"

Among those blaming the electorate was Carol Asma Abdul, who said: "The fact that the country would vote for an individual totally lacking in compassion, who is a compulsive liar, coward and who looks down on the very people who voted for him just shows how far the standards in this country have fallen. Absolutely shameful."

Aside from Southport, Merseyside remained a deep shade of red.
The MPs are Ian Byrne, Paula Barker, Kim Johnson, Maria Eagle and Dan Carden.
