A young police officer has died after plunging from a bridge into the River Forth.

Jamie Lynch, 28, from Kilwinning, Ayrshire, is the fifth Police Scotland officer to die suddenly in recent months.

He was pulled from the water near the Clackmannanshire Bridge on Sunday night.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding Jamie's tragic death.

Emergency services were called to the scene after reports of “concern for a person” and the bridge was closed to traffic in both directions just before 9.30pm on Sunday.

Police, fire crews, a coastguard helicopter and search teams were drafted in as a full-scale search got under way, but nothing could be done to save Jamie.

A police spokesman said: “The body of a 28-year-old man was recovered from the River Forth a short time later following a search.
