When Elon Musk told his 36 million Twitter followers that he was “off for a while” at the beginning of the week, few could have imagined how far off he meant.

It now appears that the SpaceX founder was visiting southwest England. Speculation is growing that Mr Musk could be planning to open a factory in the area after reports suggested that he visited a site near Bristol.

The Tesla chief executive is said to have flown in his private jet to Luton airport for a 24-hour visit to the UK to investigate a site for building electric cars.
